Governor Monday Okpebholo’s developmental strides in the Health Sector

In the heart of Nigeria’s South-South region, Edo State is witnessing a transformative era in healthcare, spearheaded by Governor Monday Okpebholo. Since assuming office, Governor Okpebholo has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to overhauling the State’s health sector, ensuring that quality and accessible healthcare becomes a reality for all Edo citizens.

Revitalizing Maternal Health Services

One of the Governor’s landmark initiatives is the establishment of the National Obstetrics Fistula Center, the first of its kind in the South-South geopolitical zone. By securing 25 hectares of land and providing a Certificate of Occupancy, Governor Okpebholo facilitated the swift commencement of this critical project, which had been stalled for nearly two years. Once operational, the Center will offer specialized treatment for women suffering from childbirth-related complications, significantly improving Maternal Healthcare and reducing obstetric fistula cases in the region.

Combating Malaria Through Strategic Partnerships

Understanding the pervasive impact of malaria, Governor Okpebholo launched the IsDB LLF Support to the Malaria Elimination Project, guaranteeing free malaria testing and treatment in all Government Hospitals for the next two years. This initiative, in collaboration with the Islamic Development Bank’s Lives and Livelihoods Fund, aims to provide critical healthcare relief to thousands of residents, particularly in underserved rural areas.

Enhancing Healthcare Infrastructure and Accessibility

Governor Okpebholo’s administration has made significant strides in upgrading healthcare facilities across the State. Notable achievements include;

The Completion of Oredo Primary Healthcare Center, to enhance Primary Healthcare delivery in the region.

The procurement of modern ultrasound machines for all eighteen Local Government Areas, improving diagnostic capabilities.

The installation of air conditioning units and transformers at the Edo Specialist Hospital to ensure a conducive environment for both patients and healthcare workers.

Expanding Health Insurance and Data Management

In a bid to make healthcare more affordable and efficient, the Governor’s administration on boarded three hundred vulnerable individuals into The Edo State Health Insurance Commission. Additionally, the digitalization of health insurance data and the establishment of a customer support policy reflect a structured approach to healthcare administration, ensuring that services are both accessible and responsive to the needs of the populace.

Significant Budgetary Allocation to Health

Demonstrating a strong commitment to the Health Sector, Governor Okpebholo allocated N63.8Billion to healthcare and an additional N1.8Billion for a Health Insurance Scheme in the 2025 budget. This substantial investment underscores the administration’s prioritization of health as a cornerstone for the State’s development.

Forward-Looking Vision

Governor Okpebholo’s approach to healthcare is holistic, addressing immediate needs while laying the groundwork for sustainable improvements. His initiatives not only tackle pressing health challenges but also aim to build a resilient Healthcare system that can adapt to future demands.

As Edo State continues on this trajectory, the Governor’s leadership serves as a beacon of hope, illustrating how dedicated governance can bring about tangible improvements in public health and overall well-being.
