Edo Govt Prioritizes Pilgrim Welfare Amidst Hajj Heatwave in Makkah

The Edo State Government, through its Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, is intensifying efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of its pilgrims currently undertaking the 2025 Hajj in Makkah.

This commitment comes as the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) issues critical advisories regarding soaring temperatures in the Holy Land.

Speaking from Makkah, the Chairman of the Edo State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Mallam Musah Muhammad Uduimoh and the Executive Secretary, Alhaji Eranga Abdulkabir Muhammadkabir, underscored the Government’s dedication to a smooth and safe pilgrimage for all Edo State Pilgrims.

According to Chairman Uduimoh in a WhatsApp voice note from Makkah, “We are constantly in touch with our pilgrims and monitoring the situation in Makkah closely. Part of ensuring their well-being involves continuous guidance and preparation for the Hajj rites, even as they are on ground”.

He noted that the Board recently hosted a mandatory Hajj lecture in Makkah, adding that the crucial session, was to equip pilgrims with the necessary knowledge and understanding of the Hajj rites, with a strong emphasis on practicalities and pilgrim welfare.

Alhaji Eranga also shared vital advice being relayed to pilgrims currently in Makkah, particularly concerning the challenges posed by limited facilities in Mina and Arafat.

In his speech during the Hajj lecture, which was made available to newsmen, he noted that the sheer volume of pilgrims can lead to long queues for essential facilities like toilets.

He explained, “Therefore, we are strongly advising our pilgrims to practice moderation in their eating habits, adhering to the Prophetic guidance of allocating a third of the stomach for food, water and air”.

He further urged pilgrims to be mindful of their consumption of items like juice, fruits, and sweets, and to plan their toilet visits strategically to avoid discomfort.

The Executive Secretary added, “Consideration for fellow pilgrims is paramount and we encourage everyone to be efficient and respectful of others waiting in line”.

Addressing the pressing issue of the ongoing heatwave, he reiterated the critical directives being disseminated from NAHCON in Makkah.

According to him, “The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria has issued a serious advisory concerning the high temperatures currently being experienced during Hajj 2025, with forecasts between 40°C and 47°C,” he stated. “Following a stakeholders’ meeting held in Makkah recently, we have been mandated to inform all our pilgrims that they are not to be outside their tents in Mina and Arafat between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.”

He said, during the lecture, it was emphasized that

the gravity of the situation (temperature this year is not normal). Pilgrims were strongly advised to stay hydrated by continuously drinking water and to carry water and umbrellas if it becomes absolutely necessary to venture outside during the peak heat hours.

“We urge all our pilgrims to strictly adhere to these instructions”. Alhaji Eranga said.
