Agriculture is the bedrock of every society – Governor Monday Okpebholo

The State College of Agriculture and Natural Resources has held its maiden matriculation of students for the 2024/2025 academic session into the various departments of Animal Health and Production Technology, Agricultural Technology and Fisheries Technology.

The matriculation ceremony took place at the College Auditorium, Iguoriakhi, in Ovia North East Local Government Area.

The Executive Governor, Senator, Monday Okpebholo who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Peter Osagie, stated that the Matriculation ceremony marked a pivotal moment in the history of the Institution, as it was a reflection of the collective efforts that went into revamping the College, efforts aimed at providing both staff and students with a functional enabling academic environment.

He added that it was a rite of passage for the pioneering students as they formally took the Matriculation Oath, pledging themselves to academic pursuit, personal development and good character.

According to the Governor, “This ceremony is not merely a formal admission into the College, but a symbolic entry into a noble discipline that lies at the heart of human survival.

“Agriculture is the bedrock of every Society. It sustains life, drives economics and anchors development.

“I commend each of you who have chosen to pursue a career in agriculture. Your choice reflects not only foresight but a deep understanding of the role agriculture plays in national and global development.

“It is also a testament to your commitment to be part of the solution to some of the greatest challenges facing humanity”.

While congratulating the students, he encouraged them to embrace the academic curriculum with passion and make use of the practical learning opportunities provided by the College.

He urged the students to explore the vast domain of agriculture from crop and animal science to agriculture economics, extension and emerging agri- technologies.

“Approach your education with deep sense of responsibility and commitment to ethical sustainable practices. As future Agricultural Professionals, you will be the custodians of our land, innovators of smart farming techniques, and guardians of our food systems”. He added.

He further stressed that the State Government has zero tolerance for any conduct capable of undermining the mission and vision of the rebranded Institution, as he enjoined them to shun cultism and other forms of anti-social behavior and to focus on their studies.

On her part, the Functioning Provost, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Iguoriakhi, Dr. (Mrs.) Eghosa Esther Akangbe thanked the State Government for the revamping and support for the College.

She congratulated the Matriculating students and admonished them to adhere to the rules and regulations of the College advising that they conduct themselves morally and be dedicated to their studies. She added that the College would not condone any act of cultism or other social vices.

Dr. Akangbe further stated that twenty-eight students were Matriculating into Departments of Animal Health and Production Technology, Agricultural Technology and Fisheries Technology.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Edith Ebomoyi, urged the students to obey all constituted authority and be good examples and role models to the society, advising them to shun cultism and other social vices that can truncate their academic journey.

High point of the ceremony was the matriculation oath taking by the matriculating students.

The ceremony witnessed the presence of Parents, guardians, the Iyase of Udo , His Royal Highness (HRH) Patrick Igbinidu, the Odionwere of Iguoriakhi, Pa, Joseph Aigbovo, Edo State Usen Polytechnic Registrar, Mr. Richard Elawure, among other dignitaries.
