Driving Education Forward: Commissioner hosts strategic talks with Authors and Publishers in Edo State

In line with Governor Okpebholo’s campaign mantra, “A New Edo has risen,” the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, brought together a group of publishers and authors for a high-level meeting at the Sir Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub in Benin City.

The gathering attracted key players from Nigeria’s educational landscape, including well-known academic authors, curriculum developers and publishing houses. They united to explore the future of textbook content, distribution and policy direction within the State’s education ecosystem.

Dr. Paddy Iyamu stressed the importance of a curriculum that not only reflects the realities and heritage of the Edo people but also aligns with National and Global standards.

“Edo State is setting a new pace in educational development. We are dedicated to creating content that not only educates but also resonates with our learners’ cultural identity”. He remarked.

The Chairman of the Nigerian Authors and Publishers (NAP) Edo State branch, Mr. Pius Okosun, thanked the State Government, emphasizing that this gathering was more than just a meeting but a declaration that Edo is poised to lead Nigeria in educational innovation.

The session featured discussions on the hurdles facing Indigenous publishing, intellectual property rights and the significance of digital textbooks in modern classrooms. Authors called for a more inclusive textbook approval process, while publishers underscored the need for stable policies and collaboration with State Governments.

A notable highlight of the day was the roll out of the uniform guideline for the upcoming Book Review program, aimed at enhancing literacy and ensuring an equitable distribution of books in both public and private schools.
