Obagie Ne’vbosa Community: Commissioner engages elders and community members over Okaighele dispute

Edo State Government through the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs has engaged Elders and Members of Obagie Ne’vbosa Community in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State to address concerns surrounding the appointment of Mr. Uyi Igiebor, as the community’s Okaighele and has directed his suspension, to allow for the community to peacefully resolve its issues and follow the guidelines and processes in appointing an Okaighele.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Sir (Dr.) Lucky Eseigbe gave this directive during a fact finding meeting at the Ministry’s premises in Benin City, after receiving a petition on an alleged infiltration of thugs with firearms posing as vigilantes, causing a security breach and mayhem in the community.

Dr. Lucky Eseigbe stressed the importance of truth, accountability, integrity and fairness urging all parties to remain honest and transparent in resolving communal matters. He appealed for peace and unity in the community, noting that the Ministry, under the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo remains committed to supporting peaceful and lawful processes aimed at fostering lasting peace in communities across the State.

While investigations are on-going, the Commissioner has directed that the community be called upon in three weeks for a follow-up meeting to ascertain their final resolutions concerning the installation of a duly appointed Okaighele and other matters brought before the Ministry.

The petitioner, Mr. Ikpomwonsa Aigbedo alleged that certain elders in the community failed to honor their earlier promise to install him as Okaighele, which prompted his petition to the Ministry. However a representative of the Odionwere, Mr. Monday Omozuhionmwen, stated that he was unaware of such promise made to Mr. Aigbedo.

Other community members who aired their views on the matter unanimously stated that the present Okaighele was allegedly installed illegally, adding that since his installation, there had been irregularities with some members facing brutal mishaps causing insecurity in the Community.

Earlier, an elder in the Community, Mr. Micheal Alohan appealed for due process to be observed in the selection and installation of both the Okaighele and Edion, noting that the positions were essential to the community’s peace and stability.

Hon. Osamede Edorodion, also a member of the community expressed appreciation to the Commissioner for his wisdom and calm approach in addressing the sensitive matter. He also extended his gratitude to the Executive Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo for his ongoing developmental projects and ensuring peace in Edo State.
